Doug Melanson Park

Remembering Doug Melanson (1925-2009)

The Doug Melanson Park was named in honour of the much-loved caretaker of the Milton Elementary School. His love of the school, its teachers, and its children was legendary. We seek to keep his memory alive as we brighten our community.

Doug Melanson was married to Helen Thibault, and together they raised two sons, Ron and Greg.

He worked for Cosmos Cotton Mills and the Brunswick Bowling Lanes before finding his calling as caretaker of the Milton Elementary School, a position he occupied from 1969-1989. Those who attended the school during those years will remember that its welcoming atmosphere was created in large part by its custodian Doug Melanson. He was proud of the school and took great pride in its gleaming floors and sparkling sinks.

Before the children arrived, he had already welcomed the teachers, sharing stories of his family. He loved to laugh and could always be relied upon for a good joke or funny story. The funnier the story, the bigger the laugh!

His favourite time of day, however, was the arrival of the students. He knew them all by name, knew the ones that were shy and needed a welcoming smile, and which ones needed a reminder to pick up under their desks at the end of the day. Gentle and kind, Doug's big heart and smile drew people to him. He loved Milton School and was loved by it in return.
